Govinda, the quintessential superstar of the ’80s and ’90s, reigned supreme in Bollywood with his charisma, impeccable comic timing, and iconic dance moves. Known for juggling multiple films at once, the actor’s hectic schedule was the stuff of legends. Shooting for as many as 10 projects simultaneously, Govinda became synonymous with back-to-back shifts and high energy. However, along with his superstardom came certain “star tantrums” that directors and producers were willing to tolerate—after all, his box office draw was undeniable.

Recently, veteran actor Shakti Kapoor opened up in an interview with Bollywood Bubble about how much the beloved “Chi Chi” has changed over the years. Kapoor humorously reminisced about Govinda’s notorious habit of arriving extremely late for shoots during his heyday.

“The one thing that has completely transformed about him is his punctuality,” Kapoor shared. “Back then, he would arrive at 9 p.m. for a 9 a.m. shift. Today, he shows up at 8:30 a.m. for a 9 a.m. call time. That’s a huge change!”

Kapoor attributed this change to the unpredictable nature of the industry. “Insecurity aadmi ko kaha se kaha pahucha deti hai (Insecurity changes people). Now he is very professional, and the entire industry recognizes that,” he said, emphasizing Govinda’s commitment to his craft in recent years.

Shakti Kapoor also revealed a quirky anecdote from the past that shed light on the admiration Govinda commanded among his peers. Kapoor recalled a shooting incident in Hyderabad, where the two were performing a qawwali face-off on stage. Amidst the bustling crowd, Kapoor noticed someone who seemed oddly familiar yet out of place.

“There was this very short guy standing in a corner of the crowd. I couldn’t place him at first, but after a while, I realized it was Aamir Khan!” Kapoor said with a laugh. Curious about Aamir’s unannounced visit, Kapoor asked him what brought him to the set.

To his surprise, Aamir admitted he had come to watch Govinda in action. “I wanted to see how he manages to lip-sync so effortlessly and deliver such long takes in a single shot,” Aamir confessed, going on to declare himself as Govinda’s biggest fan.

Kapoor, reflecting on Govinda’s current standing in the industry, dismissed the notion that the actor’s comeback window had passed. “People say it’s too late for Govinda to return, but I don’t believe so. Legends like Amrish Puri began their careers at 44. It’s never too late,” he concluded, expressing hope for a second innings for his co-star.

With his legacy as one of Bollywood’s most versatile entertainers intact, Govinda remains a cherished figure for both fans and peers alike. As Kapoor aptly put it, the man who could command audiences with his dance, comedy, and larger-than-life screen presence is far from finished.
