Heavy rain in Bengaluru causes waterlogging, MLA visits affected areas on Bulldozer

Heavy rain in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, often dubbed the “Silicon Valley of India,” has been brought to a standstill after relentless rainfall over the past 48 hours submerged several parts of the city under knee-deep water. What was once bustling urban life has turned into a water-logged nightmare, with streets resembling rivers, vehicles marooned, and residents wading through flooded lanes.

The downpour wreaked havoc, especially in low-lying areas like Sai Layout and Horamavu, which emerged as the worst-hit zones. Traffic snarls already a staple of Bengaluru’s daily life intensified as vehicles broke down and tree branches collapsed across the city. Public transportation slowed to a crawl, leaving thousands stranded.

In an unusual yet symbolic gesture, local MLA B Basavraj took to the streets of Sai Layout on a JCB bulldozer to assess the damage first-hand. With floodwaters flowing into homes and destroying electronics and furniture, authorities began evacuating affected residents to safer zones. JCBs are now being used not just for assessment, but also to clear blockages and drain stagnant water in inundated neighborhoods.

The impact of the rainstorm extended beyond Bengaluru, affecting districts like Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Kolar, Tumakuru, Mandya, Mysuru, and even as far as Bidar and Chitradurga. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a ‘yellow’ alert for coastal Karnataka and an ‘orange’ alert for north and south interior regions, warning of very heavy rainfall.

“As per the current cyclonic circulation, Karnataka, especially the coastal parts, will continue to see heavy rainfall. Bengaluru is likely to receive more downpour over the next two days,” an IMD official stated. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre echoed the warning, forecasting moderate to heavy rain with thunder and lightning across most districts through May 22.

As authorities scramble to mitigate the damage and residents cope with flooding and property loss, all eyes remain on the skies and the weather forecast in hope that relief comes sooner rather than later.
