Unnao Rape Case: Kuldeep Singh Sengar Granted Two-Week Bail by High Court

The Delhi High Court has granted two weeks of interim bail to expelled BJP MLA and accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar on medical grounds. The court has directed that Sengar be admitted to AIIMS, New Delhi, for a medical examination. The medical superintendent is to provide a report to the court, suggesting whether treatment at AIIMS is feasible. Reports claim that Sengar is suffering from diabetes, cataracts, retinal issues, and other health complications.

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court sought a response from the CBI regarding Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s petition, which requests the suspension of his 10-year prison sentence on medical grounds. This sentence was handed down for his involvement in the custodial death of the father of the Unnao rape survivor. The court has also asked jail authorities to submit a report on Sengar’s medical condition and scheduled the next hearing on January 13, 2025.

Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri stated, “Notice will be issued only on medical grounds.” The CBI’s counsel informed the court that earlier this year, in June, the High Court had refused to suspend Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s conviction while his appeal was pending.

The Unnao rape case came to light in 2017 when a young woman accused Kuldeep Sengar of rape. The matter gained further attention in 2018 when the survivor’s father allegedly died in police custody. On March 13, 2020, a trial court sentenced Sengar to 10 years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10 lakh for his role in the custodial death. The court noted that the deceased was the sole breadwinner of the family, emphasizing that no leniency could be shown in such a case.
