Ratan Tata’s 86th Birthday: A Simple Look at His Life, Money, and Helping Others

Ratan Tata’s 86th Birthday, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, celebrated his 86th birthday on December 28. He’s the ‘most followed entrepreneur’ in India with 12 million followers on X (used to be Twitter), according to the 360 ONE Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2023.

Born in Mumbai on December 28, 1937, to Naval Tata and Sooni Tata, Ratan Tata went to Campion School and later studied in Mumbai and Shimla. He learned about buildings at Cornell University and worked in Los Angeles before coming back to India in 1962.

In that same year, he started working with the Tata Group in Jamshedpur. After studying more at Harvard Business School in 1975, he became the head of the Tata Group in 1991.

Even though he isn’t one of the richest people, Ratan Tata is known for his smart business moves and hard work.

In 2022, Ratan Tata’s money was ₹3,800 crore, and he was 421st on the rich list. In 2021, he was 433rd with ₹3,500 crore. Tata Trusts give 66% of Tata Sons’ money to help others, making a big impact.

As of July 31, 2023, there are 29 Tata companies worth $300 billion (₹24 trillion) together, says the official website.

Helping Others

Ratanji Tata, the son of Jamsetji Tata, gave a lot to help others. The Sir Ratan Tata Trust, started in 1919 with ₹80 lakh, helps many causes and is a big charity in India.

Tata Group companies, helped by Tata Sons, also do a lot of good. They own 66% of Tata Sons and use it to help with health, education, business, arts, and more. Under Ratan Tata’s leadership, Tata Group has done a lot to make healthcare and education better in India.
