In a significant moment for the Indian judiciary, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai took the oath of office as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday, with President Droupadi Murmu administering the oath in a ceremony steeped in solemnity and symbolism. The oath was delivered in Hindi, reflecting Justice Gavai’s deep cultural roots.

His appointment holds historical significance as he becomes only the second Chief Justice from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, following in the footsteps of Justice KG Balakrishnan, who served from 2007 to 2010.

Justice Gavai succeeds CJI Sanjiv Khanna and will serve a tenure of over six months, concluding on November 23. The ceremony was graced by a distinguished gathering including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Arjun Ram Meghwal, and former President Ram Nath Kovind.

Hailing from a legacy of public service, Justice Gavai is the son of the late RS Gavai, a respected leader of the Republican Party of India (Gavai faction) and former Governor of Bihar, Kerala, and Sikkim.

Justice Gavai began his legal journey in 1985, initially working under the mentorship of the late Raja S Bhonsale before establishing his independent practice at the Bombay High Court in 1987. He rose through the ranks and was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019.
