In a tragic incident highlighting the growing concern over Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune, a Chartered Accountant (CA) from the Dhayari area succumbed to the rare nerve disorder on Saturday evening. The CA first experienced symptoms of diarrhea on January 11 while in Pune. Shortly after, his family traveled to their native village in Solapur for a program. Upon arrival, his condition worsened, and he developed severe weakness, prompting his admission to a local hospital.

Doctors diagnosed him with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves, causing weakness, paralysis, and in some cases, death. Despite intensive care unit (ICU) treatment for five days, his health continued to deteriorate.

Although his condition improved enough for him to be moved from the ICU to a general ward on Saturday, he later experienced breathing difficulties and passed away. Doctors confirmed that he had completed his treatment for GBS and was showing signs of recovery before his sudden decline. An autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause of death.

The CA is survived by his wife, two young daughters, his mother, and his brother.

Rising GBS Cases in Pune

The incident has added to the alarm surrounding the rising cases of GBS in Pune. According to a state health department official, the total number of GBS cases in the city has now reached 73, including 47 men and 26 women. Of these, 14 patients remain on ventilator support.

GBS often follows a bacterial or viral infection. In Pune, several patients with GBS reported symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea—linked to infections caused by Campylobacter jejuni or norovirus—prior to developing the disorder.

Understanding Guillain-Barré Syndrome

GBS is a rare condition in which the immune system attacks healthy nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, leading to symptoms like weakness, tingling, or even paralysis. These symptoms usually begin in the legs and progress to the arms. While there is no cure, most patients recover fully with treatment, though some may experience long-term complications.

This tragic case highlights the urgency of addressing the rising incidence of GBS and improving awareness of its symptoms and risks among the public and healthcare professionals.
