Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hit back at RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav over his controversial comment on the Maha Kumbh, accusing him of disrespecting India’s rich heritage and deep-rooted faith. Addressing a rally in Bihar’s Bhagalpur while releasing the 19th instalment of the PM-KISAN scheme, Modi didn’t hold back.

“In Prayagraj, the grand Mahakumbh—an event of faith, unity, and harmony—is unfolding. But those who ruled during ‘jungleraj’ hate our traditions and mock our beliefs,” he said. Modi highlighted the massive turnout of devotees at the Triveni Sangam and contrasted it with the opposition’s criticism.

“This is India’s biggest spiritual festival, drawing more people for a holy dip than the entire population of Europe. Yet, these people are insulting it,” he remarked. The Prime Minister also linked this criticism to past opposition to the Ram Temple, stating, “The same people who were upset over the Ram Mandir is now targeting the Kumbh. But Bihar will never forgive those who disrespect our faith.”

What Did Lalu Say?

Lalu Prasad Yadav had sparked controversy after calling the Maha Kumbh “meaningless” while commenting on the recent stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station. His remark drew sharp reactions from the BJP, which accused him of indulging in “appeasement politics.”

He wasn’t the only opposition leader to take a dig at the ongoing Kumbh. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee labeled it “Mrityu Kumbh” (Death Kumbh), while SP chief Akhilesh Yadav dismissed the “Maha” title as a government gimmick to waste money. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, too, took a jibe, questioning whether taking a dip in the Sangam could wash away sins.

As the war of words intensifies, the Maha Kumbh remains at the center of a heated political battle between the ruling NDA and the opposition.
