House maid steals gold worth ₹14 lakh

The accused, P. Shanti, a resident of Ragigudda, had been working at the home of a school teacher, Ayesha Siddiqua, when the theft took place in the last week of May. The missing items included a gold necklace, four bangles, and two gold coins, all mysteriously vanished from a cupboard that showed no signs of forced entry.

Ayesha, suspecting an inside job, immediately filed a police complaint naming Shanti. “The cupboard was untouched, and Ayesha had already expressed doubt about Shanti. That helped us narrow down the investigation,” the police said.

During interrogation, Shanti confessed. She revealed that she had taken out a ₹6 lakh loan last year for her daughter’s wedding and, despite managing to repay ₹1 lakh, was struggling with the remaining amount. Driven by desperation, she admitted to knowing where the cupboard keys were kept and stole the ornaments in hopes of selling them to raise funds.

In an attempt to cover her crime, Shanti sold the stolen gold across three different jewellery shops. However, police swiftly recovered the ornaments and took her into custody.
