In a major leap for India’s clean energy ambitions, TruAlt Bioenergy Limited, the nation’s largest ethanol producer has been officially granted Oil Marketing Company (OMC) status. With this approval, TruAlt now joins the ranks of entities licensed to retail and market petroleum products across India, including clean fuels like ethanol and Bio-CNG, as well as conventional fuels such as petrol and diesel.

From Biofuel Giant to National Fuel Retailer

Already a key player in India’s bioenergy space, TruAlt’s OMC status empowers it to build a nationwide retail network, enabling direct access to the fuel market. The company has announced ambitious plans to roll out 100 fuel stations in its initial phase, starting in Karnataka and Maharashtra. These outlets will not only sell traditional fuels but will spotlight next-generation alternatives that align with India’s sustainability goals.

Importantly, TruAlt is aligning with the government’s energy inclusion mission by committing that at least 5% of its outlets will be established in remote and underserved areas, driving last-mile connectivity.

A Win for Farmers and the Planet

Vijay Nirani, Managing Director of TruAlt Bioenergy, called the development a “defining step” in the company’s evolution.

“With this milestone, we can serve India’s dynamic fuel needs more directly, while accelerating the shift to cleaner energy,” he said.
“Farmers remain central to our model, we procure agri-residue and biomass from rural communities to power biofuels like ethanol and Bio-CNG. It’s a true circular economy: from farm to fuel, and back to farm. We’re restoring soil health and returning value to the grassroots.”

Through this model, TruAlt is not just producing clean energy, but also empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture. Its Bio-CNG plants operated through subsidiary Leafiniti Bioenergy even produce organic manure as a by-product, reinforcing circular agricultural practices.

A Strategic Shift in India’s Energy Landscape

The timing couldn’t be better. In FY 2024-25, India hit a record high in petroleum product consumption at 239.5 million metric tonnes (MMT). Petrol saw a 7.5% growth, diesel continued to rise steadily, and the diesel-to-petrol consumption ratio dropped from 3.6 to 2.3 signalling a shift in mobility patterns and preferences.

“With 2.5 crore cars sold annually, India’s appetite for mobility is unmatched,” Nirani remarked. “We now have the opportunity to build a retail fuel ecosystem that not only meets current demand but drives the transition to intelligent, clean mobility.”
