Back in the day, the star fees were modest by today’s standards. Yet, within that modesty, Dharmendra stood at the top. The actor, who played the lovable rogue Veeru, was reportedly the highest-paid member of the cast with a pay check of ₹1.5 lakh. Sanjeev Kumar, who portrayed the stoic and resilient Thakur Baldev Singh, followed close behind with ₹1.25 lakh. Amitabh Bachchan, now a towering figure in Indian cinema, was paid ₹1 lakh for his role as Jai.

What many may not know is that Amitabh Bachchan might not have been in the film at all if it weren’t for Dharmendra. In a candid appearance on Aap Ki Adaalat, Dharmendra shared how he had quietly recommended Amitabh for the role. The part of Jai was initially going to Shatrughan Sinha. “When Shatru found out, he asked me why I gave his role away. I said, ‘Yaar tu samajhta nahi’… Amitabh had come to meet me, and I felt he deserved it,” Dharmendra said.

In another interview with ANI, Dharmendra recalled Bachchan’s early days and how his presence and sincerity stood out. “Amitabh sahab used to sit next to me. I told Ramesh Sippy ji this new guy, just by his voice, he seems like he will do great work. There was something about the way he loved himself, that quiet confidence. I liked that. I said, take him.”
