Spiritual Sequel to ‘Taare Zameen Par’

While Sitaare Zameen Par carries forward the spirit of Aamir’s beloved 2007 film Taare Zameen Par, the story takes a different route. Aamir Khan plays Gulshan, a hot-headed, politically incorrect basketball coach with a troubled past. Unlike the gentle and empathetic art teacher Nikumbh from the original, Gulshan is volatile and often lashes out at those around him including his family and colleagues.

Speaking at a recent virtual event in China, Aamir revealed, “My character in this film is the complete opposite of Nikumbh. He’s rude, fights with everyone, even hits his senior coach. But the heart of the story is how people from the spectrum help him transform into a better human being.”

Inspired by Real-Life Champions

Sitaare Zameen Par is inspired by the acclaimed Spanish film Champions (2018), based on the true story of the Aderes basketball team, athletes with intellectual disabilities who rose against odds in Valencia, Spain. The story was also adapted in Hollywood, with Woody Harrelson playing the lead.
