Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut has thrown her weight behind the Waqf Amendment Bill, calling it a much-needed step to root out corruption that has been “eating into our country like termites.” Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, the Mandi MP made it clear—no individual, institution, or religious organization is above the law.

The bill, which aims to bring transparency to the management and administration of Waqf properties in India, was passed in the Lok Sabha after a high-voltage 12-hour debate, securing a 288-232 vote victory. It now faces scrutiny in the Rajya Sabha, where the Opposition has accused the ruling BJP of using the bill to polarize society.

But the government has pushed back hard, insisting the legislation is about property management, not religion. “For decades, Waqf properties have been misused, often under the guise of appeasement politics,” a senior BJP leader said. “This bill will ensure that these assets finally benefit those they were meant for—especially women and children.”

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju highlighted the staggering scale of Waqf holdings, revealing that India currently has 8.72 lakh Waqf properties. “Back in 2006, the Sachar Committee estimated that just 4.9 lakh of these properties generated around ₹12,000 crore in earnings. Imagine the numbers today,” he remarked.

As the bill moves through Parliament, tensions remain high, but its message is loud and clear—when it comes to law and governance, there are no untouchables.
