A firing incident occurred at the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, Punjab, where Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal and other party leaders were performing “seva” on December 2 under a religious punishment announced by Shri Akal Takht Sahib. Sukhbir Singh Badal narrowly escaped unhurt as Narayan Singh Choura, the alleged attacker, attempted to shoot him. However, security personnel quickly intervened and apprehended the assailant.

Speaking about the incident, ADCP Harpal Singh stated that security measures were robust, and Sukhbir Singh Badal was promptly shielded. “I arrived here at 7 a.m. There was tight security. Narayan Singh Choura, the attacker, was present here yesterday as well. He first went to pay obeisance inside the temple and later opened fire outside. However, he couldn’t shoot directly as our personnel were present. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident,” Harpal Singh added.

Shri Akal Takht Sahib Imposes Punishment

Sukhbir Singh Badal was at the Golden Temple to serve the punishment given by Shri Akal Takht Sahib. On Tuesday, he spent time in the temple complex from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dressed in a volunteer’s attire and holding a spear, he stood guard outside the clock tower for an hour. Later, he attended kirtan (religious hymns) for an hour and then cleaned utensils.

Other prominent leaders, including former ministers Bikram Singh Majithia and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, also cleaned utensils. Party leaders Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema, Surjit Singh Rakhra, Prem Singh Chandumajra, and Mahesh Inder Grewal cleaned toilets as part of the punishment. Sukhbir Singh Badal, who was assigned to clean toilets as well, was exempted due to a fractured leg.
