In a sensational anti-corruption raid, the Karnataka Lokayukta unearthed assets worth over ₹30 crore from an unlikely suspect, a former daily-wage clerk earning just ₹15,000 per month.

The accused, Kalakappa Nidagundi, formerly employed at Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL) in Koppal district, is now at the center of a massive corruption scandal. Despite his modest job title, Nidagundi allegedly lived a life of shocking luxury and amassed staggering wealth which included 24 houses, 4 land plots, 40 acres of farmland, and gold and silver worth lakhs. And it wasn’t just in his name much of the property was stashed under his wife’s and her brother’s identities.

The Lokayukta also seized:

  • 350 grams of gold jewellery
  • 1.5 kg of silver ornaments
  • Four vehicles, including two cars and two two-wheelers

Investigators say Nidagundi, in collusion with ZM Chincholkar, a former KRIDL engineer, siphoned off over ₹72 crore by forging documents and creating fake bills for 96 phantom infrastructure projects none of which were ever completed.

The scandal unraveled after a whistleblower complaint triggered a court-sanctioned Lokayukta probe. What followed was a full-blown revelation of one of the most audacious cases of disproportionate assets in recent Karnataka history.
